Some Descendants of Lawrence Southwick and Cassandra Baruell(?)
Introduction
The following pages list data for all known family members as of September 8, 2017.
Each immediate family is presented in their own section that contains a graphical family tree as well as a description with information about each referenced person and their children. The child section provides information about the children of the preceding couple. When a child has offspring of their own this is presented in a separate family section for that child. In this case a '+' is used to denote that an individual will appear later in the book as a parent with his/her own children and there is a link to the appropriate family reference number. For children with partners but no offspring the partner data is given with the reference family. Roman numerals, followed by a period, are used to indicate the birth order.
In the area titled "Family of the Starting Person" the ancestors of Lawrence Southwick and Cassandra Burnell are presented in a kind of enhanced Pedigree Chart which displays the graphic representation of their direct-line ancestors and the children of the couple. This chapter contains information about the couple whose offspring are listed in the later chapters.
The arear titled "Families of his Descendants" provides details (as known as of the publication date) for the offspring of Lawrence Southwick and Cassandra Burnell. There is a chapter for each generation. Relatives are listed in the order of the nearness of their relationship.
Sources for the information provided are given in the footnotes.
Family of the Starting Person
Family of Lawrence Southwick and Cassandra Burnell
1. Lawrence Southwick was born in 1594 in Tetnal, Staffordshire, England. He was baptized in First Church Salem, MA, on February 24, 1639. Lawrence died in Shelter Island, Suffolk Co., NY, on May 10, 1659, at the age of 65. He was buried in Shelter Island, Suffolk Co., NY, on September 29, 1660. Will dated July 10, 1659. Lawrence married Cassandra Burnell on January 25, 1623. They had six children. Cassandra Burnell was born in Lancashire, England, in 1596. She was also known as Clarissa Shattuck or Buffum. Cassandra was christened in First Church Salem, MA, on February 24, 1639. She reached 63 years of age and died in Shelter Island, Suffolk Co., NY, in May 1659.
Notes: With William Robinson, Thomas Gardner testified that John and Daniel Southwick had settled the division of their father Lawrence's estate [June Term, 1660, EQC 2:217]. Gardner also took the inventory of Lawrence Southwick's estate [November Term, 1660, EQC 2:263]. He took the inventory of William Cantlebury of Salem 25 June 1663, and probably was the Thomas Gardner who took the inventory of Ralph Tompkins of Salem 12 November 1666 [EQC 3:83, 379].
The story of Lawrence Southwick was unfortunately very similar. Savage states "He was, I suppose, a glass blower...". Possibly through Holmes' influence he, with wife Cassandra, joined the first church in salem and he was admitted freeman on 6 September of that year [1639]. On the 6 December following [they] had [children] John, Josiah, Daniel, and Provided baptised at once". John would have been fifteen years old then, old enough to have started working with his father in the glass house. Daniel was probably about four yeras old by then. Savage relates: in "thee bloody persecution in Massachusetts under the successive rule of Governors Endicot and Bellingham...the whole family suffered much, fines and imprisonment fell on all, and the daughter Clarissa was subjected to great severity. When the fines of Daniel and Provided were unpaid, the tender-hearted General Court, with intent to magnify the glory of God, ordered them to be sold for slaves to any Christians in Virginia or Barbados. We are permitted to rejoice, that the sentence was not enforced and the father with his flock found refuge at Shelter Island near the east end of Long Island where in peace he made his will of 10 July 1659, allow.? in 1660. Much as they might love their native land the danger from their opinions required banishment it seems with a proviso, that they should suffer death for return. One of the flock was Henry Trarice (perverted to Thask), who came in the [ship] Mary and John 1634, and married Mary, daughter of Lawrence Southwick. They went with her father to Shelter Island but on their return "his wife was imprisoned many months for her perverse religion". Similarly Samual Gascoyne who married Lawrence's daughter Provided "was punished 1658, for his curiosity or depravity in attending a Quaker meeting". Lawrence Southwick was born about 1600 and had married Cassandra Shattuck (Burnell in another source) in Kingswinford in 1623 (although there is a vague reference to their marriage in 1619) and they had at least six children christened there between 1624 and 1637. The eldest child John, appears to have been born about 1620 in Lancaster. Two other children Provided and Lawrence appear to have been born in Lancashire shortly before the family sailed for America, but the dates and places are uncertain. Of these, three, Ananias, Lawrence and Debbora do not appear to have survived to travel with their parents to Salem. Kingswinford and the adjacent parish of Oldswinford were the home of the important English glass-making industry of Stourbridge, which is still a major glass centre to this day. At the stage when Lawrence was living in Kingswinford there were probably only window glass houses working there, so it is probable that he was a window glass maker. On a modern map, based on information from 1692, Josiah, John, Daniel and Samual Southwick are all shown living in Salem, close to "Glass-house field" and close to what appears to be a Friends (Quaker) meeting house. Adjacent to these were houses of several mambers of the Trask family, including Henry.

Provided was baptized in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts, USA, on October 6, 1639. Provided married Samuel Gaskill on October 30, 1662, in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts, USA.[[25]] They had seven children. Samuel Gaskill was born about 1641.
Notes: Provided, the youngest daughter of Lawrence and Cassandra, who had "repented and was released" at the June 1658 session of the Salem Quarterly Court was back before the court in July of 1658 for "absence from meeting and for being present at two Quaker meetings." No longer repentent, she was to be "set by the heels in the stocks an hour for calling the court persecutors." Her name is found in court records of November 1658 and, again in November of 1659 for absence from meeting.
At the 11 May 1659 session of the General Court, a unique recommendation for punishment, traditionally credited to Capt. Hathorne, one of the magistrates, was devised. "Whereas Daniell and Provided Southwicke, sonne and daughter to Lawrence Southwicke, have binn fyned by the County Courts at Salem & Ipswich pretending they have no estates, resolving not to worke, and others likewise have binn fyned, & more like to be fyned, for siding with the Quakers & absenting themselves from the publicke ordinances, - in answer to a question, what course shall be taken for the satisfaction of the fines, the Court, on perusall of the lawe, title arrests, resolved that the Tresurers of the severall counties are and shall hereby be impowered to sell the said persons to any of the English nation at Virginia or Barbadoes."
It was her appearance before the Salem Quarterly Court on 10 May 1660 and the resultant sentence that has given her the status of a folk heroine. "Provided Suthwicke, upon pfe of her contemptous & presumptuous carriage at Salem to the great disturbance of the peace. The court setts a fine on her of forty shillings and to abyd in prisson untill she have payd it and the fine sett by Salem court or other course to be taken to sell her for the payment thereof acording to law & fees of court." In June of 1660, Edward Batter, the treasurer, recorded that debits included 10 for Daniell and Provided Southwicke, "their fines not paid."
Tradition assigns to Edward Batter the attempt to implement the earlier recommendation of the Court and ordered that Daniel Provided Southwick be sold into slavery to the ships' captains and sent to Virginia or the Barbados Island. They would be kept in prison until this scheme could be implemented.
Provided, but nineteen years of age, separated from her parents who had been banished, now faced a bleak future. One can only speculate on what thoughts went through her mind as she undoubtedly prayed for the miracle of deliverance and placed her fate in Divine justice.
Batter, convinced that one of the ships would fulfill his attempt to rid his colony of at least two Quakers, placed Provided and her brother as any common slave on the auction block. Such a sight surely must have engendered interest, excitement and nervous, mocking derision from the crowd of curious colonists. The warrants were read and bidding was invited from the captains of the merchant ships. However, the ships' captains refused to be party to such an act by saying that they would spoil all the ship's company. To which Batter is said to have replied, "No, you need not fear that, for they are poor, harmless creatures, and will not hurt anybody." The ship's captain successfuly countered with, "Will they not so? And will you offer to make slaves of such harmless creatures?" That ended the attempted sale.
They were released while another punishment was contemplated; however, the laws regarding the treatment of Quakers would be changed before another could be devised. Provided would, within two years of this ordeal, marry a fellow Quaker, Samuel Gaskill and remain at Salem. John Greenleaf Whittier, the Quaker poet, immortalized the only known instance in American history of a white girl put up at auction as a slave in his poem entitled "Cassandra Southwick," substituting her mother's name Cassandra, for that of Provided.
