Lieutenant Henry2, [Henry Adams of Braintree1] b. in England, 1604; m. in Braintree, Nov. 17, 1643, Elizabeth Paine, dau. of Moses Paine, Esq.

He was Lieutenant of the Medfield military company, which fought against the Indians in 1675-76. He was killed by Indians while standing in his doorway, Feb. 21, 1676, the second year of the war.

William Henry, 1757; enlisted as a private from Leverett in the Revolutionary war, Sept. 22, 1777; Capt. Joseph Slarrow, Col. David Wells; discharged Oct. 18, served one month and one day; settled in the east part of Sunderland, now Leverett, Mass., where he and his wife Sybil lived together for 64 years. He d. 1 Jan., 1832, age 97.

William Heath's Suffolk regiment, Oct., 1775, and Sergeant in Capt. William Badcock's company, Col. Pierce's regiment; enlisted March 1, 1778; discharged April 3, served at Castle Island. He d. in Worcester, Mass., 23 Sept., 1843, age 82.

Ebenezer5 (1746), Ebenezer4, Henry3, Ens. Edward2, Henry1 - Was a corporal in Capt. William Watkins' Company, Col. Benjamin Simon's Berkshire regiment; enlisted Dec. 16, 1776; served 2 months 9 days; was at Ticonderoga sick in camp, Feb. 25, 1777; he was allowed a bounty of œ2 in May, 1782, for killing a "woolf."

Barnabas5 (1749), Ebenezer4, Henry3, Ens. Edward2, Henry1 - He was constable in Becket, March, 1776; was a private in Capt. Peter Porter's company, Col Benjamin Simon's Berkshire regiment, April 26, 1777, to May 20, 25 days; marched to Saratoga, N. Y.

Capt. Simon5 (1746) Joseph4, Henry3, Ens. Edward2, Henry1 - He was Sergeant from Sandisfield and New Marlboro, Mass., in Capt. Moses Soul's company, Col. John Fellows' regiment, and served 17 days, going to Lexington in April, 1775; he was a Captain in Col. John Collar's regiment, and served under Arnold in the expedition against Quebec.

Corp. Moses5 (1748) Joseph4, Henry3, Ens. Edward2, Henry1 - He enlisted from Lenox, Mass.; was Corporal in Capt. Soul's company, April 19, 1775; served for 17 days; enlisted May 8, 1775, and served one month and one day; was in Capt. Noah Allen's company, Col. Edw. Wigglesworth's regiment, and was reported dead Aug., 1777.

Sergt. Zebediah5 (1753) Joseph4, Henry3, Ens. Edward2, Henry1 - He was a private from Sandisfield and New Marlboro, in Capt. Moses Pond's company, Col. John Fellows' Berkshire regiment, April, 1775; served 21 days; enlisted May 8, 1775, and served three months and a day; he enlisted again July 8, 1777, and was discharged Aug. 15. He enlisted as sergeant, Oct. 13, 1781, in Capt. Simon Adams' company, Col. John Collar's regiment, and served 12 days.

Obed5 (1745), Thomas4, Edward3, Jr., Ens. Edward2, Henry1 - Was a private in Capt. Ebenezer Jenkins'  company, Col. Freeman's regiment; enlisted Sept. 6, 1778; discharged Sept. 14; allowed 8 days' service at Falmouth and Dartmouth.

Micah6 (1762), Jonathan5, Jonathan4, John3, Ens. Edward2, Henry1 - Was a private in Capt. John Ellis?? company, Col. Seth Bullard's  regiment; he enlisted July 29, 1780, served in Rhode Island till Aug. 7; had  credit for 12 days. He d. in Medway, Mass., 1 April, 1842, age 80.

Heman6 (1761), Thomas4, Edward3, Jr., Ens. Edward2, Henry1 - He enlisted as a private from Sandwich, June 9, 1779, for 9 months; is described as 17 years of age, 5 feet and 4 inches high, and light complexion. He enlisted again Aug. 17, 1779, and was discharged May 17, 1780;

Freeman; enlisted again July, 1780; discharged Jan. 22, 1781; served in war of 1812-14;

An Abner Adams was private in Capt. Noah Dickinson's Hampshire Co., Col. Elisha Porter's Reg.; enlisted Aug. 18, 1777; marched to New Providence.

The historian of New Ipswich says he was a soldier in the Revolution and furnished three sons for the war.


Levi5 (1728), David4, Jonathan3, Lieut. Thomas2, Henry1 -
Levi and his four sons were carpenters by trade; with three of them, viz.: Levi Jr., David, and John, he was a soldier in the Revolution. He was at New London, Conn., at the time of the capture of Fort Griswold, Sept. 7, 1781.

He served as a soldier in Connecticut; removed to Pawlet, Vt., and was with his brother in Capt. Willard's Co., Col. Ira Allen's Reg., in Oct., 1781. He was enrolled as a pensioner in Otsego Co. for services in the Conn. line, July 31, 1818.

He, like his other brothers, was a carpenter by trade, removed to Vermont, and served as a soldier in the Revolution. He is said to have been on guard at the execution of Maj. Andre, Oct. 2, 1780. He received a pension from March 4, 1831;

Fox, in the history of old Dunstable, says that Jacob and Henry were soldiers of the Revolution from Dunstable.

Her husband, Samuel Holt, son of John and his 2nd wife Deborah (Stevens) Holt; b. in Andover, Mass., May 1, 1749 was was a soldier, was at NY in Sept., 1776, in Capt. Abijah Smith's Co., Col. Baldwin's Reg. He d. in Temple, N. H., 5 Dec., 1799. She d. 24 June, 1844.

An Abel Adams was picket-guard in Maj. Laomi Baldwin's (afterwards wards Colonel) Middlesex Reg., May 23, 1775. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in Capt. Benjamin Fletcher's Co. of the 7th Middlesex Reg., July 6, 1780. He served also in R. I. in Capt. Asa Drury's Co., Col. Francis' Reg., Aug 1, to Dec. 1, 1781. Capt. Abel held a commission as captain of a company in the 7th Reg., 3d Div. of the militia of Middlesex Co., dated June 8, 1787.

He was undoubtedly a soldier of the Revolution, a private in Capt. Ephraim Cheney's Co., Col. J. Smith's Reg.; turned out April 19, 1775, and served 11 days; was drafted July 19, 1776, and paid a bounty; enlisted again Dec. 8, 1776, and was discharged Dec. 30th, also served 30 days in R. I., Oct. 1, 1777. He enlisted also. Aug. 3, 1780, in the 4th Suffolk Reg., and was dischaged Aug. 7.


Capt. John5 (1744-5), Capt. John4, John3, Peter2, Henry1 -
Capt. John was a Lieutenant in Capt. Cleveland's Co. at Lexington, April 19, 1775, and was in the battle of Bunker Hill in June. He served in Capt. Cady's Co. of militia in Aug., 1778, and probably became Captain in 1789.


Samuel5 (1753), Capt. John4, John3, Peter2, Henry1 -
He served in the army of the Revolution seven years; was one of the body guard of Gen. Washington.


Jeremiah5 (1732-3), Isaac4, John3, Peter2, Henry1 -
In March, 1780, he served 4 days in Capt. Zebediah Dewey's Co., and in Oct., 1780, he served 8 days in the same company, and was allowed for 16 miles of travel. On the alarm of Oct., 1781, he served 9 days at Castleton, Vt., in the Company of Capt. Abraham Moseley, by order of Lieut. Col. Clark.


Joseph5 (1751), Capt. Michael4, John3, Peter2, Henry1 -
A Joseph of Killingly, enlisted May 11, 1775, in Capt. Joseph
Elliott's 8th Co. and served till Sept 28. A Joseph of Killingly bought 94 acres of land in Lanesboro, Mass., April 23, 1777, and he was a soldier in the Revolution, enlisting from Lanesboro.


Samuel5 (1744), Joseph4, Jr., Joseph3, Peter2, Henry1 -
The four brothers, Samuel, Joseph, Benjamin and Abner, were soldiers in the Revolution. They enlisted from the town of Gageboro, now Windsor, Berkshire Co., Mass., in Capt. Wm. Clarke's Co., Col. Benjamin Simonds' Reg., Oct. 13, 1780, and marched from Windsor to Shaftsbury, serving 6 days.


Joseph5 & Benjamin5 (1760), Joseph4, Jr., Joseph3, Peter2, Henry1 -
Benjamin marched from Gageboro, July 9, 1777, by order of Gen. Schuyler, and served 22 days. Joseph and Benjamin served in Capt. Zebediah Dewey's Co., by order of Lieut. Col. Clark, 10 days, on alarm at Castleton, Oct. 21, 1781.

Was a private and musician in Capt. Parmalee Allen's Co. of Rangers, Maj. Ebenezer Allen's detachment of the Vermont line, Feb. 1 to Dec. 1, 1780. He served 2 days on alarm at Castleton, June 10, 1781.

John Ashley's Berkshire Reg.; enlisted Aug. 1, 1777; discharged Aug. 20; service 20 days; also served Sept. 19 to Oct. 19, 1777, in Capt. Roswell Downing's Co., Col. Ashley's Reg. Joshua Adams enlisted from Sheffield, Mass., for 3 years in Capt. Bartlett's Co., Col. Weston's Reg.; served March 18, 1778, to Dec. 31, 1779.

Joshua Adams, recorded as b. in Egremont, age 22 years; a farmer; 5 feet, 9 inches high, dark hair and complexion; was enlisted Nov., 1779, in Capt. Carr's Co., at West Point, 8th Massachusetts Reg. A Joshua Adams, probably same as above, was a private from Egremont, in Capt. Ingersoll's Co., Col. David Brewster's Berk shire Reg.; was enlisted May 22, 1775, and served 2 months and 2 weeks. "Joshua of Alford," Mass., was awarded a bounty of 200 acres of land, or $20.00, under resolve of March 1, 1801, for services in the 8th Massachusetts Reg.

He held a commission under King George III, in 1761, as Coroner for the County of Suffolk; also a Lieutenant's commission in a company of cavalry, and was a man of prominence and influence. He espoused the patriot cause, and enlisted as a sergeant from Milton, in Capt. Joseph Vose's Co., Col. Robertson's Reg., afterward Col. Abijah Pierce's 3d Suffolk Reg., April 19, 1775, and served 15 days. March 23, 1776, he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in Capt. Wm. Badcock's Co.--same Reg. He marched to Bennington, and probably also to Rhode Island.

He was a private from Milton in Capt. Josiah Vose's Co.; enlisted April 13, 1776; discharged April 26; served 12 days on the coast defense.

Dr. Adams graduated from Bowdoin College in 1849, and from Harvard Medical School, 1853; settled in Framingham, Mass.; was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the 7th Massachusetts Reg. Vols., by Gov. Andrew in May, 1861; reached Washington, D. C., on duty July 15th; was in the siege of Yorktown in 1862, and in the battles of Williamsburg and Fair Oaks; was appointed surgeon of the 32d Massachusetts Reg., May 26, 1862, and was in the battles of 2nd Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg; was with Burnside at the battles of Chancellorsville, Brandy Station and Gettysburg. He resigned Aug. 4, 1863, on account of impaired eyesight. He became Captain of Co. F, 56th Massachusetts Reg., in Jan., 1864, and was in the battles of the Wilderness; was wounded May 6th, and taken prisoner, confined for 3 months at Lynchburg; transferred to Libby, and later released on parole. While in prison he was commissioned as Major. He was discharged on account of wounds, Dec., 1864, but was reinstated at his own request in Feb., 1865, and took part in the assault on Petersburg, April 2,

Emerson Opdyke, and rendered the regiment valuable service, taking part in numerous battles: Franklin, Tenn., March 9; Triune, Tenn., June 9, Chattanooga, Aug. 21, Chickamauga, Sept. 23, in 1863; at New Hope Church, Ga., May 25 to June 5, and at Kenesaw Mountain, June 10 and July 2, in 1864. He was, for a time, special agent in charge of the mails for the division of the Mississippi. He was captured, with others, by Forrest's cavalry, Sept. 20, 1864, at Athens, Ala., and sent to Cahaba, Ala., where he endured close confinement and great hardship for three months. He was exchanged at Vicksburg late in Nov., and served as Aide on the staff of Gen. Opdyke. He was discharged at Nashville in March, 1865. He has served in various important commissions as an iron expert, has been a prominent, active Commander in the Grand Army, and is now an iron merchant of New York.

Elias Daniel9, b. in Peru, Vt., July 21, 1839; m. 1872, in Peru, S. A. Rosanna Cubelius of Lima, S. A. He shipped on a whaler for 3 years in 1857; enlisted Aug. 15, 1861, in Co. A, 4th Reg. Vermont Vols. and was transferred after 18 months to the Mississippi flotilla under Commodore Foote. A little later he was a gunner on the ironclad Baron DeKalb, and was in several battles, at Island No. 10, Vicksburg, and other places. His boat was blown up on the Yazoo in July, 1864, but he escaped, and returned home in the fall. Later he again went to sea for his health, visited the Sandwich Islands and other places in the Pacific Ocean, and spent seven years in Australia. He engaged in the business of printing and book binding at Lima, S. A., in 1871. He visited the U. S. and made an important exhibit of South American relics at the centennial in 1876. He returned in 1878, and settled at Darien, Wis., where he d. 31 Dec., 1878. His widow removed to San Francisco, Cal.
